REASONS FOR JOINING CULTS
1. The desire to establish a culture which was less affluent in the university as against the rich.
2. Those who fail to meet academic standards as set by the institution would join in order to pass.
3. Exerting power at all cost and unwilling to give it up.
4. To intimidate members of staff and students in the university.
5. For protection against other cult members.
6. To gain financial assistance from politicians and some elites who want to attack their opponents.
7. For passing of examination by intimidated lecturers.
8. To r*pe prominent girls or women in the campus.
9. Erosion of the traditional academic culture.
CONSEQUENCES OF CULTISM IN SCHOOLS
Some consequences of cultism in schools include:
A. Expulsion: Several students have been expelled from school as a result of cult activities. For instance in the 1990s, some students were expelled from Abia State University, Abia. Several students have been expelled from different schools over activities of cultism.
B. Violence: Activities of cult members is usually violent since 1990s leading to destruction of lives and property. It has led to abduction or kidnapping of persons, and members of their household for the payment of a ransom.
C. Death: There has been several deaths recorded in schools of learning in Nigeria as a result of the activities of cultists. Death usually occurs as a result of clashes between two rival gangs of cultists or on innocent members of the society who are not usually aware of their offence.
D. Spiritual Problems: Cultist activities are usually done in secret and non members do not understand their activities. They mostly go diabolical and receive power against other cult gang. The plurality or legion of cult causes the struggle for superiority of gangs. The act of cultism affects the spirituality of members as they are not committed to any religious activities but those of a secret nature.
E. R*pe: Male cultists may sometimes be required to pass an additional hurdle before becoming full members including r*ping a popular female student or a female member of staff. Prospective female members may be required to stand a lot of rounds of s*xual inter course. This may lead to high level of STDs including HIV/AIDS.
F. Theft: Cult members are charged annual membership fees if between ten thousand naira to thirty thousand naira. Cultists whose parents cannot afford excess money for their up keep will usually resort to theft to be able to meet their obligations.
G. Fear: Cult members whether present or past are mostly feared by some members of the society. This is largely because of the activities of cult organizations being secret and fearful.
